400 acres of thriving wilderness in Hyderabad, home of 734 plants and species, 220 bird species, deer, pythons & centuries old trees, is on the verge destruction of Kancha Gachibowli forest.

The government has given clean chit to to the Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation ( TGIIC ) to develop and auction the biodiversity of the Kancha Gachibowli forest to develop a IT park. On 30 march, despite the outrage of the public and H.U students protest a dozen of bulldozers reached at the site and started to degrade the forest. “An estimate of 10,000 tress from 17,700 trees from 400 acres land have already been chopped down” said Sai Krishna a GIS analyst.

As per the reports the Kancha Gachibowli has 734 species of flowering plants, 10 species of mammals, 15 species of reptiles, and 220 species of birds. And according to the current situation they all are in danger now.
When there was no impact of the protest students of University of Hyderabad ( H.U ) filed a petition in high court and after hearing of two PIL petition filed about the destruction of Kancha Gachibowli. The court orally ordered to stop the felling of trees, but even after that shrubs were burnt.
Then ( H.U ) Teachers Association organised a protest and 2 April demanding to withdraw the police force and to stop the destruction. They also the forest to declared that bio-heritage reserve.
There are many harmful effects from the deforestation of Kancha Gachibowli forest. It leads to rise in the temperature of the surroundings, reduces the production of oxygen and the most harmful the wildlife will have no place to live in.
Supreme Court hearing on Kancha Gachibowli forest
On Thursday, supreme court took suo-moto cognisance of the deforestation and ordered no further felling of trees until further orders. A bench of Justices BR Gavai and AG Masih after reading the newspaper report about large-scale deforestation, asked the Registrar (Judicial) of Telangana High Court to forthwith visit the site and submit an interim report by 3.30 pm on Thursday.
suo-moto cognisance meaning “on its own motion” is a legal term that refers to a court’s power to initiate proceedings or take action on its own initiative without a formal petition or complain, to address matter of public interest or immediate judicial intervention.

Telangana govt has decided to auction 400 acres of land in Kancha Gachibowli. Students of the University of Hyderabad are protesting, citing concerns that the land is ecologically sensitive, rich in wildlife and also home to a water body. Several students were manhandled and detained by the police. Remember the Aarey protests?
