As per the current situation and the foreign relations of India it clearly depicts that Indian Foreign Policy is lacking somewhere. And we will discuss all expects.
Indian Government 2014-25
The current Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi who has been on the same post from the past decade. He had been travelling to different countries as soon as he became P.M in 2014. 89 foreign trips, more than 75 countries visited gained popularity around the globe.
But yet when during the conflict with Pakistan in the form of retaliation of terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir none of the nation supported India openly.
And from the above mentioned visits 12 visits were to U.S in the presence of Donald Trump but during war Trump said “I am very close to India and I am very close to Pakistan they will figure it one way or another”. And not only this but he also replied on “Operation Sindoor” and said ” Its a shame we just heard about it”
Indian Government before 2014
After the terrorist attack of 26/11 Barack Obama has given statement “India has right to self defence”.
And even 1 year later when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visiter U.S a joint statement was given by Manmohan Singh and Barak Obama “The two leaders have shared interest in the stability, development and independence of Afganistan and in the defeat of terrorist safe heavens in Pakistan and Afganistan”. And Obama even pressureized Pakistan to act against 26/11 terrorists.
Indian Foreign Policy Failure
India has lost its importance and power among the other powerful nations which is the main cause of Indian Foreign Policy failure and some are mentioned below :
- Ceasefire – Before any announcement by any official or government employee Trump made a post on “X” informing about the ceasefire between India and Pakistan which directly means U.S has control over both the nations. And in the Saudi U.S investment forum Trump said “To maintain peace and stop war between India and Pakistan, I offered them trade otherwise there can be nuclear war” which refers India as a Greedy nation.
Though India has rejected these claim and MEA speaker Randhir Jaiswal said “the war was in a conventional domain” and even Pakistan has denied any ‘nuclear angle’.
- Financial Action Task Force (FATF) is the global money laundering and terrorist financing watchdog. Pakistan was in the grey list of FATF which means it could not take loan from IMF or world bank but in October 2022 FATF was removed from the grey list and after 1 year a loan of $7 billion dollar got passed.
- The International Monetary Fund (IMF) works to achieve sustainable growth and prosperity for all of its 25 member. Some countries are in a group and some are indivisual.
And recently IMF have passed $1 billion dollar loan to Pakistan, India objected as “poor track record of” and this money can be used as”state sponsored border terrorism”, but then also loan was granted cause this was the loan of $7 billion dollar granted previous year and this loan was to be given in 7 instalment and this was the 2nd instalment.
IMF has the voting shares for different countries India, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka has 3.05 % voting share whereas U.S has the highest voting share which is 6.99 %
The question rises here is if foreign policies are strong why India didn’t succeed in conviencing these nations to disapprove to IMP regarding this pakistan loan.
Foreign relations of India
Foreign policies there are no permanent friends and no permanent enemies only temporary interests.
China, Turkey and Azerbaijan has openly expressed political and military solidarity with pakistan. It means that Pakistan is more beneficial and important for these countries.
Bangladesh was one of the strong allies of India from a long time but now the differences can be seen cause the head of Interim Government Mohammed Yunus visited China and has taken $2.1 billion dollars as loan and grant from the China Government and Chinese Companies. And the Government officials of Bangladesh were recorded delivering Anti-Indian speeches.
Sri-Lanka has been burdened under debt of $1.1 billion dollar by China. And has a deal in which a chinese company got Hambantota port for 99 years lease and 15,000 acres to built an industrial zone. Previous year October 2024, India &U.S raised insecurities concerns, but even after that Sri Lanka Government allowed Chinese Training ship to dock on their port.
Bhutan another neighbouring country. Bhutan, China talk about settling boundary row, establishing diplomatic ties. And on October 2024, A research shows that China has constructed 19 villages and three small settlements within Bhutan’s traditional borders.
And if we talk about Nepal. It seems that Current Indian Government has also offended Nepal Government. Cause immediately after the election results Prime Minister of Nepal used to visit India first, but his time he went Beijing. Not only visited but also joined China’s Belt road initiative raises concerns for New Delhi.
Maintaining the upper hand in Foreign policy
- Communication – Formal deploamatic meetings and talks between Government officials that can reduce the chances if misunderstanding and miscommunication and strengthen the relation to two nations.
- Hard Power – This is to be used if any nation try to harm or effect any nation to maintain peace and harmony one should show their Military power and economic sanctions.
- Cultural Diplomacy – Interacting with people of different country and different culture that leads to depict a image of friendly and kind people.
- Soft Power – This is a powerful side which can be used to built trust and healthy relations. There are many things that comes under this such as Trade, Intelligence sharing, Tourism, Education, Immigration opportunity, foreign aid and cultural exchange.
